Photoshop Coloring Tutorial... Page 2

Next you select a tool. I always use the Airbrush tool because it's nice and soft. You can use the Paintbrush tool as well, but it doesn't really matter. I'll be using the Airbrush in this tutorial. Click the Airbrush tool and go to the top of the screen. You will notice that there is an Airbrush icon in the left corner to indicate what tool you are using. Open up the brush selection like you see in the image on the right and choose your brush. I suggest using hard round brushes for a more solid cell style. I want this image to feel soft and sketchy, so I'm using a soft brush. Click the one your gonna use. As an extra tip, you can change brush sizes on the keyboard using quick keys. Larger = ] and smaller = [
Next, pick your color. You can find the color picker by clicking on the color boxes on the tool box. (see image on the right) I'm choosing red to color Inuyasha's clothes.
Now is the fun part. Start painting! I'm coloring in all the areas that need to be red. Make sure you're painting in the red layer. You don't wanna ruin your outline. Change the brush size to fit the brush in smaller areas. Don't be sad if you mess up, you can use the eraser tool to fix it.
You want to make sure you also color white areas with white. That way, when you put in a background, you won't see it through their eyes, and in this case his hair. I added a layer that will always stay at the bottom of all the layers and named it background. Later we will put a cool background in there, but for now just use the Paintbucket tool to fill it with a color. I chose blue. This way I can paint my white layer and be able to see the white! Look at the picture on the right to see what I mean.
When you're done with the white, turn off the horrible blue background and save that project for later. In order to do this, press the eyeball icon to the left of the layer. This will make it invisible. It's still there, just turned off for now.
Now I'm done with all the base colors. Your image should look something like what's on the right. Now it's time to learn some shading tricks. This is where the picture starts to look good.
